Gentle Words
"Gentle Words" is a term we use to practice the golden rule with our tongue. The referenced link talks about the power of blessing and positive words. This term was invented to address what I'll call the "Columbine Affect" on the public school system. My youngest son, 5, was suspended for three days for saying to a friend who he rough-houses with at daycare, "I am going to kill you by throwing blocks at you." These were foam 2-D blocks. The school viewed this as a premeditated murder threat.
Despite what I perceive as an over reaction, the school has done an excellent job of helping my son.

What Bible Can I Read To My Children Who Are Under 7?
What Bible Can I Read To My Children Who Are Under 7?
I recommend checking out the New International Readers Version. I know some folks don't like the NIV, but I found this link very helpful in my search.
Bottom Line:
The NIrV is one of the easier versions to read. I am not a theologian, but I have asked many for years what would be best for my kids and none have answered my questions as well as this page has. The NIrV is at a 3rd grade reading level. It is a conceptual translation, not a word for word. I hope this helps others who find themselves in my position.
